Ras Manikya is a traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily used to treat skin diseases, cough, and respiratory conditions like asthma and bronchitis. This medicine must be taken under strict medical supervision because it contains heavy metals like purified arsenic sulphide (orpiment).
Key Uses and Benefits
Ras Manikya is indicated for a range of health issues, primarily those caused by an imbalance of the Vata and Kapha doshas:
- Skin Conditions: It is widely used for various dermatological ailments, including eczema, boils, itching, rashes, leucoderma, and difficult-to-heal wounds.
- Respiratory Health: It helps manage chronic cough, asthma, bronchitis, and difficult breathing by reducing inflammation and phlegm.
- Other Uses: It is also used to help with fever, rheumatism, anemia, and to boost general vitality and immune function. Some formulations may also support reproductive health.
Key Ingredients
The main ingredient in most preparations is Shuddha Haratala (purified orpiment, or arsenic trisulphide), which gives the medicine its characteristic ruby-like color. Other formulations may also include a complex blend of purified minerals (like mercury, sulfur, mica, iron, and copper calx) and herbal extracts.
Safety and Dosage
- Medical Supervision: Due to the presence of heavy metals, Ras Manikya should only be used under the direct guidance and supervision of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.
- Dosage: The typical dosage is around 125 mg, once or twice a day, usually administered with a vehicle like ghee (clarified butter) and honey, or as directed by the doctor.
- Precautions: Pregnant or lactating women and children should generally avoid this medicine unless specifically prescribed by a physician. The product label should always be read carefully before use.
